  3. Dec 9, 2021 · Norse mythology is made up of much more than just the famous gods of Odin, Thor and Loki. There are many other gods, monster and creatures that inhabit the 9 worlds. Of the different creatures we detail below, I think the most interesting have to be the Jötnar, the feared and worthy enemies of the gods.

    • Elves. Said to inhabit the realm of Alfheim, under the rule of the God Freyr, the Elves were tall, slim demi-gods with pale skin and hair, who were more beautiful than the sun.
    • Dwarfs. Svartalfheim – literally home of the black elves – is where the Dwarfs live. Unlike our modern depictions, there is no evidence that Dwarfs were short, stout beings.
    • Jötnar. The Jötnar (singular Jötunn) are an odd bunch, and difficult to define. Despite generally being translated as ‘Giants', they are usually the same size as humans.
    • Valkyries. A stirring rendition of Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries has adorned many a film to good effect but what are the Valkyries? They're Odin's female helping spirits who are depicted as elegant maidens ferrying the slain to Valhalla.
    • Elves. In Norse mythology, there are two different types of elves, the Dokkalfar (the dark elves) and the Ljosalfar (the light elves). The Dokkalfar elves lived under the earth and were said to be similar to dwarves but were completely black in color.
    • Huldra. The Huldra is a female creature typically depicted as a beautiful woman with a crown of flowers and long, blonde hair, but she had the tail of a cow which made men afraid of her.
    • Fenrir. Fenrir is one of the most famous wolves in history, the offspring of Angroboda, the giantess, and the Norse god Loki. His siblings are the world serpent, Jörmungandr, and the goddess Hel.
    • The Kraken. The Kraken is a famous sea monster depicted as a giant squid or octopus. In some mythical Norse tales, the body of the Kraken was said to be so large that people mistook it for an island.
  4. Overview of Norse Mythology Creatures. Monsters of Norse mythology are unique and wide-ranging. Valkyries pick bold warriors for Valhalla, while Loki’s tricks sometimes change the fate of Asgard and the entire Norse world. These stories are full of battles, alliances, and clever schemes.
