The Incident was a 1977 drilling accident at the Swan construction site that unleashed a large amount of electromagnetic energy. Though the Swan station originally aimed to harness this energy, the DHARMA Initiative had to change its goal after they punctured the electromagnetic pocket.
Essentially the "INCIDENT" is an event that has always transpired in the lost verse at a certain point in time on the island, the darma initiative started the drilling, which released an electromagnetic pulse of energy and caused major developments to the island itself.
