Peter Härtling. Biography. Peter Härtling was born in Chemnitz in 1933. At the end of the war, his family fled to Austria, though his father was taken prisoner and died at the end of the war in a Russian prisoner of war camp. The family went to Nürtingen but, in 1946, his mother killed herself.
