The Trimates, sometimes called Leakey's Angels, is a name given to three women — Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birutė Galdikas — chosen by anthropologist Louis Leakey to study primates in their natural environments. They studied chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans, respectively.
The Trimates. Considered the world's preeminent primatologist, Dr. Goodall was the first of the Trimates to live among the Great Apes. It was in 1960 that Jane arrived at Gombe National Park in Tanzania and began her research on chimpanzees.
Trimates is the story of two generations of women: the young pioneers - Goodall, Fossey and Galdikas - who set out into the jungles over half a century ago, and the generation who followed their articles, transfixed by their stories and determined to follow the same distant paths.
This documentary not only tells the story of the pioneering generation, but follows the adventures of three young women who were inspired by the Trimates to make the same choices, and live with the Great Apes of Africa and Borneo.
