Edwin Earl Catmull (born March 31, 1945) is an American computer scientist and animator who served as the co-founder of Pixar and the President of Walt Disney Animation Studios. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ] He has been honored for his contributions to 3D computer graphics , including the 2019 ACM Turing Award .
Edwin Catmull’s pioneering work in the field of computer graphics and animation underpins the film industry as we know it today. Catmull was born Parkersburg, West Virginia in 1945 but moved to Utah when he was six months old.
Catmull is one of the architects of the RenderMan rendering software, which has been used in 44 of the last 47 films nominated for an Academy Award in the Visual Effects category. In addition to being a member of IEEE's Computer Society since 1978, Dr. Catmull is active in several professional organizations.
