Thomas Bernardine [1] [2] [3] Barry (1 July 1897 – 2 July 1980), better known as Tom Barry, was a prominent guerrilla leader in the Irish Republican Army (IRA) during the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War.
Barry opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 6 December 1921, because, according to him, it betrayed the Irish Republic and partitioned Ireland. He fought on the Republican side in the Irish Civil War (1922–1923) and was imprisoned by the Irish Free State after the Battle of Dublin in July 1922.

Dec 9, 2020 · GROWING up in Dunmanway in the 1960s, we were truly immersed in the exploits of the legendary Boys of Kilmichael and their leader, Tom Barry, was – in our impressionable young minds – ranked as a veritable deity. His book, Guerilla Days in Ireland, was regarded as the bible of the War of Independence in West Cork.
Throughout the 1920s he was regarded as a potential rival by the IRA and was thought to be involved in IRB-linked efforts to form independent republican groups based in Cork. Barry did not actually rejoin the IRA until late 1932, after Fianna Fáil had come to power in that year’s general election.
Barry’s death (murder) led to a huge outpouring of grief and anger all over Ireland. The British strangle hold and hostile actions in Dublin led the Republican military leadership to a plan of action.
