Exit Smiling is a 1926 American silent comedy film directed by Sam Taylor and starring New York and London revues star Beatrice Lillie in her first (and only silent) film role and Jack Pickford, the brother of star Mary Pickford. The film was also the debut of actor Franklin Pangborn.
Exit Smiling. A maid who works for a traveling theatrical troupe wants desperately to be an actress, and manages to get some small roles in the company's productions, but is determined to do anything she can to show that she deserves a shot at the big time.

With her big heart Violet stands out against a petty and ill-tempered world. For one moment Violet sinks to their level. The morning after she meets Jimmy, while he still thinks she’s a star actress, she talks down to a servant, acting like a diva to maintain Jimmy’s awed impression of her.
Considering MGM’s track record with comedy in later years—most infamously their effect on the careers of Buster Keaton and the Marx Brothers—it’s comforting to know that, in 1926, they were still capable of producing so hilarious, touching, and lovingly crafted a comedy as Exit Smiling.
