Matsui’s latest film, “Just Remembering,” which won the audience award at last year’s Tokyo International Film Festival, is quite different in tone and theme.
The story begins on July 26th 2021, portraying the six years of a couple’s relationship in reverse, from its end to its beginning, by revisiting the same day of each year of their relationship. Among the birthdays the couple spent together, some are special, some not. Just remembering those days that are now gone forever.

The influence of Jim Jarmusch's Night on Earth on Daigo Matsui's Just Remembering is obvious enough for someone—like myself—who hasn’t even seen Jim's taxi-centric anthology film. The direct references are impossible to miss, but stylistically, Matsui's film feels more like Jarmusch by way of Kore-eda.
