Jack: "Well, she's quite a character."

Mrs Hughes: "Lady Rose? That's one word for her."

    — Jack Ross and Elsie Hughes discuss Rose.

Lady Rose Aldridge (née MacClare; b. 1902), known as Lady Rose or just Rose for most of Downton Abbey, is the youngest child of Hugh and Susan MacClare, the niece of Agatha and Louisa, the younger sister of James and Annabelle, the sister-in-law of Annabelle's husband, the great-niece of Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, the wife of Atticus Aldridge, the daughter-in-law of Daniel and Rachel Aldridge and the mother of Victoria Rachel Cora Aldridge. In Autumn 1920, she visits Downton Abbey and stays with Violet in the Dower House. She returns a year later, in September 1921, when the Crawley family visits her home at Duneagle Castle, where it is agreed that Rose will go to stay with them when her parents go to India. She moves there sometime between September 1921 and February 1922. During her longer stay, she has relationships between Easingwold under-gardener Samuel Thawley, Sir John Bullock, and singer Jack Ross.

Rose is a rule-breaker and a bit of a rebellious character, but she never intends to cause harm and is a kind, sweet friend to the Crawley family, hoping to bring fun and excitement to Downton in dark times and happy times too. She, just like the late Lady Sybil, is quite bubbly and cheerful, entirely open to new ideas and change in society, which ...

Rose is a traditional Scottish beauty; sunshine blonde curls, fair skin with rosy cheeks and lips. She has a slender figure and is always glamorous and stylish. The youngest of the adults, there is eternally a bright smile on her face and a sparkle in her honey-brown eyes. Rose attracts the attention of many men with her charm and beauty.

    Atticus Aldridge

The relationship between Rose and Atticus is a quaint contrast to a majority of the complex and often prolonged other romantic relationships portrayed on the show. They are depicted as barring genuine and considerate feelings towards one other. They are unafraid to battle the trials that continuously aim to combat their relationship. Atticus meets Rose during a rainstorm, helping her with her bags. He continues to see her, and eventually reveals to her his and his family's Jewish faith, a fact which does not bother her. Rose eventually introduces Atticus to her family, and he in turn introduces them to his parents. His mother finds Rose quite charming and is happy that Atticus is quite taken with her, whereas his father does not wish for him to marry out of the faith. When Edith runs away, Rose lets Atticus in on the secret if he promises not to pass it on (despite the family's plan not to tell anyone). Atticus remembers Lord Grantham saying Edith had inherited Michael Gregson's publishing company. Atticus suggests contacting the office as they might know where to find her. Rose praises him as clever. Atticus soon proposes to Rose, and she accepts. Rose's father takes a liking to Atticus. Unfortunately, Atticus's father and Rose's mother do not approve. When Lord Sinderby reminds his son that if he marries Rose their children will grow up Anglican, Atticus responds that they may choose to convert to Judaism in the future, and insists that any children he and Rose have will grow up knowing both faiths. Susan tries to sabotage the wedding by setting Atticus up with a prostitute during his stag party. Atticus confronts his father, demanding to know if he was responsible as Atticus had not let Rose or any of her family know the extend of his father's disapproval. Lord Sinderby insists he was not responsible. Fortunately, Rose and Atticus go ahead and are happily married.

    Her Parents

Rose's relationship with her mother is clearly strained, while her father is more understanding. Susan does not approve of Rose's choices in fashion or her behaviour, always responding coldly to Rose's remarks. Rose does appear to love, or at least respect her father, Hugh, not wanting him to know about her affair with Margadale and asking him to stick up for her when Susan disapproves of Rose's dress for a ball, which he does. When Rose decides to marry Jack Ross, she remarks to Mary how she wants to see her mother's face crumble when she announces the news, reaffirming her hatred for Susan. She says to Atticus Aldridge in 1924 that her father is "a darling" whereas her mother is a "nut". The strain in her relationship with her mother is evident when Rose names her daughter in honor of Lady Sinderby and Cora--women with whom she has stronger relationships--over Susan.

    Sam Thawley

Rose is immediately attracted to Sam when they meet in York. Sam is attracted to her as well, asking after her at Downton following a fight between himself and another man over dancing with her. Rose, however, sends him away with a kiss.

In this situation, Lady Rose MacClare married Mr Atticus Aldridge, so the same rule applies.
