Bird of Paradise is a 1932 American pre-Code romantic adventure drama film directed by King Vidor and starring Dolores del Río and Joel McCrea. Based on the 1912 play of the same name by Richard Walton Tully , it was released by RKO Radio Pictures .
An island Princess falls for a visiting Frenchman, but her people are against it. André Laurence accompanies his college roommate, Tenga, back to Tenga's Polynesian island home. There, André assumes the native life and, after many trials with the native customs and their suspicions, marries his friend's sister, Kalua.
The beachcomber warns Andre that the island paradise becomes unbearable to "civilized" men, and reveals that he beats his native wife and children in order to teach them fear. Andre is not daunted by the beachcomber's ramblings, and upon his return, assures the worried Tenga that he wants to marry Kalua and live an honorable life with the natives.
