The Ford Foundation is an American private foundation with the stated goal of advancing human welfare. Created in 1936 by Edsel Ford and his father Henry Ford, it was originally funded by a US$25,000 (approx. $550,000 in 2023) gift from Edsel Ford.
How does an endowment work? How does grantmaking help fuel social change? These videos break down the essentials of grantmaking and explain how the foundation operates.
We support organizations that address the underlying drivers of inequality and align with our programmatic work around the world. Every year, we award roughly 1,500 grants to institutions with transformative ideas and scalable solutions with the aim of achieving the greatest impact.
We, as a foundation, embed BUILD principles and approaches into the core of our grantmaking practices, and deepens our commitment to civil society institutional resilience. Other funders in the US and around the world commit to larger, longer, more flexible grants aimed at fostering resilient civil society institutions.
Weaving Resilience is an $80 million initiative to support civil society organizations throughout the Global South. Developed with our partners in eight regions, this initiative will strengthen and connect civil society leaders on the frontlines of the fight for social justice.
We launched our first round of BUILD grants from 2016 to 2021, dispersing $1 billion in grant dollars to nearly 350 grantee partners in over 30 countries spanning all of Ford’s programmatic areas. The next round of $1 billion in BUILD grants will be awarded starting in January 2022 through 2026.
