When tragedy befalls him, Weardale-born Edward Earle spends five years in a Sunderland orphanage, where he befriends Tommy Bell. As a young man, Edward vows to spend his life helping orphans, but he needs money for his mission, and he and Tommy turn to a life of crime to fund it.
