Born in Amsterdam, Ilse Hughan studied Literature and Translation at the University of Amsterdam and worked for years as a Dutch translator of French and Italian movies. In 1992 she brought new life to the film company Fortuna Films, founded by her grandfather Jean Desmet in 1909.

Initially founded by Jean Desmet in 1909, granddaughter Ilse Hughan moved with Fortuna Films into production in 2002 focusing on Latin America. Working with directors as Lisandro Alonso, Paz Encina & Pablo Lamar.
Born in Amsterdam, Ilse Hughan entered cinema through subtitling after studying French and Italian in college. She collaborated in many Dutch fiction films as assistant producer, director and editor. From 1988 to 1992 she distributed independently produced fiction and documentary films at the Amsterdam Cinematheque.
