Beatties – Wolverhampton. The C20 Beatties store is a multi-period site developed first in the 1920s-30s. A Burton’s men’s clothes shop was built on a curved corner site at Victoria St/Darlington St and Beatties themselves replaced their existing Victoria St store in the 1930s with a building by local architects Lavender, Twentyman and Percy.
Beatties is one of the oldest extant retailers in Wolverhampton - and a much liked department store (something of a local institution). Their history in Wolverhampton will, one day, get a few pages elsewhere on this site. In recent years the group expanded very rapidly but this remained their HQ and flagship store.

In 1877 he founded the Victoria Drapery Supply Stores in rented premises at 77 Victoria Street, on part of where the later Beatties store would be built. He had a starting capital of just £300 and served in the shop with two junior assistants. It was a tiny shop with a frontage of just 14 feet.
