Connelly was a journalist in Pittsburgh early in his career and went on to be a playwright who is most famous for his Pulitzer Prize winning play The Green Pastures in 1930.

On his own, he is perhaps best remembered for Green Pastures (1930), a folk version of the Old Testament dramatized through the lives of blacks of the southern United States.
