To close the account completely, visit your email account provider. Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts. Tap the email account you want to remove from your iPhone, then tap Sign Out or Delete Account. Sometimes it I get the message - Cannot Get Mail - The connection to the server failed. Other times it updates the Inbox but does not download the content. And sometimes it just works. This is happening on both IPad and IPhone.
