Margarete Steiff GmbH are proud to offer a celebration of a noble Princess, adorned in her regal robes, worn on the occasion of the coronation, at the monarch’s request. Her fine white mohair emulates the Princess’s ivory silk crepe gown she wore underneath her formal mantles. A further tribute is the Welsh flag embroidered on her paw pad.
Margarete Steiff wurde als drittes von vier Kindern der Eheleute Friedrich (1816–1894) und Maria Margarete Steiff (geb. Hähnle, verw. Wulz, 1815–1889) im schwäbischen Giengen geboren. Im Alter von 18 Monaten erkrankte sie an schwerem Fieber und war danach teilweise gelähmt; später wurde bei ihr Kinderlähmung diagnostiziert.

Margarete Steiff (1847-1909) has been inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame. She is known as the pioneer who sewed the world’s very first plush toy, changing the world of play forever. Her legacy will be recognized during the Toy Association’s annual Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards, known as the “Oscars” of the toy industry, set to be held virtually on February 12, 2021.
This wonderful elephant in 22 cm size is made of the finest grey mohair. The corners of the eyes and the inner ears are produced using complex airbrushing. As well as the tail. The soles are made of velvet soft felt. The attractive saddlecloth on its back is a special decorative touch. It is edged with trim and decorated with a pompom.
Margarete Steiff, born in the town of Giengen in southern Germany, contracted polio when she was 18 months old. The illness left her feet paralysed which meant that she was bound to a wheel chair. Margarete loved school and particularly enjoyed needlework classes. She also learned how to play the zither, a string instrument.
