Sep 5, 2006 · This movie also is the ONLY time that Mel decided to have his wife take on a role in one of his movies. Anne Bancroft [may she rest in peace] gives a strong performance as the wife of the owner of the theatrical troupe [Brooks]. Overall, a good movie. Funny and serious at the same time. A tour de force by Mel Brooks; and one that should be watched.

It has the humor, the slightly off-color and not so politically correct jokes, and the typical perspective that one expects from one of his films. Though Brooks was just acting and not behind the camera, his late and frequent collaborator Thomas Meehan was one of the screenwriters.
