According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data.
Aug 26, 2021 · on my system the total available SSD space is 245.11 GB and I think OS itself was taking about 10-15 GB if I am not mistaken, so your usable free space should be around 230 GB on a brand new system. Wow, thats a relief, because I have a 512GB MBP and iMac and the OS on those takes up 100GB+. Looks like M1 is way more optimized.
Dec 10, 2007 · A new user takes up about 24KB on my computer, but YMMV. Don't know where you get that from, Josh. A new users home folder on 10.4.11 should take 84KB. Of course, you are listed as being still on 10.4.10, so maybe …. Interestingly, this has increased quite a bit in 10.5, to 752K! Still not a huge amount of course.

Aug 4, 2022 · So I decided to take a backup in my iMac and then restore from that. Now , when I connected the old phone to iMac ist is showing the used size as 120.87GB. That is ok, I started the backup. The backup folder (this is the only backup) size is 165.11GB and the backup is still running.
