The car park is open 9am - 5.30pm (October – March) 9am – 7.45pm (April to September) It was probably first built in the early 12th century after William de Warenne received the Manor of Wakefield from Henry I in about 1106. Did you know that the poem ‘Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain’ to remember the colours of the rainbow is inspired by the Battle of Wakefield? It happened on 30th December 1460 on Wakefield Green below Sandal Castle. Richard of York (the 3rd Duke of York) was father to the future Edward IV and Richard III’s, and was killed in the Battle of Wakefield.less

  There is a small free car park to park in and plenty of space on the road.The castle itself is in ruins but you can clearly see that it is a motte and bailey castle. There are some information boards... more

  Toilets castle, lake views, lake, miniature steam train rides £2 each. Adventure playground. Cafe/ restaurant. Great day out more
