moreWe are one of the very few surviving asylum cemeteries in the UK. Opened in 1874, just under 3000 mostly forgotten souls rest here in the Mendip Hospital Cemetery, burial ground of the old Somerset County Pauper Lunatic Asylum. Situated in a beautiful wooded valley on the edge of Wells, the cemetery is a haven of peace and tranquility.Birds and wildlife are found in abundance. The grass is cut each year in early autumn to encourage seeds to set and wild flowers to flourish. In the chapel you will find original maps and plans of the hospital and an exhibition about the history of the hospital and its burial ground.less
Very peaceful. Lots to read in the chapel but the staff are so knowledgeable we listened to the stories they told about the site. Very interesting.more
